Choosing
the right landscape company
When
choosing a landscape company, make sure they are fully insured.
This will eliminate the risk of legal situations if something happens
on your property. We are fully insured and licensed and can provide
you with a copy of our workman's compensation binder upon request.
Mowing
& Lawn Information
Proper
Mowing is at 2 ½ - 3 inches in height. It is recommended
that your lawn is cut at this height all year round and that your
blade is kept sharp in order to prevent disease and insect problems.
It will also help the turf from burn out. Proper mowing and timely
weed prevention can control annual weeds like crabgrass.
When
you mow your lawn try to cut it a different way each time, this
will insure that you are cutting the blades of grass and not just
sweeping the blades of grass.
Watering
is very important. You need to design a schedule specific to your
landscape. (i.e.) Shady areas need less watering verses full sun
areas. As a rule of thumb, sunny areas need about 6oz. of water
a week or when you fill up a tuna can.
Fertilizing
Like
people, your turf and trees need food too! To have a healthy landscape
you need to provide a timely balanced diet for your trees, shrubs,
turf and flowers.
Lime
PH
in your soil is important in New England since we typically have
very acidic soil due to a high amount of rain and trees. Lime should
be applied two times a year at 20 lbs per thousand square feet.
Planting
Planting
trees and shrubs is typically done in the spring due to a wide variety
of trees and shrubs in stock at the nursery. Also, spring is our
rainy season and relieves us of the watering chore. It is not advisable
to plant or transplant during July or August because the heat and
lack of rain will stress the plant out.
When
maintaining your trees and shrubs make sure you prune them at the
correct time. This will let you enjoy the natural beauty and health
of your trees and shrubs.
Picking
out plants for your landscape
Choosing
the right tree or shrub can be challenging. Some need shade and
some need full sun. When planting trees and shrubs you need to install
them in the correct area, some do not prefer a lot of water - like
near waterspouts, and some require it. Most trees are expensive
and you do not want to take a chance of loosing them.
Mulching
Mulching
is done for a number of reasons. Aesthetics is the most popular
reason as it makes the beds stand out. Moisture is the more practical
reason to mulch as it helps keep plants and flowers from wilting.
It also helps ward away insects. Most insects will stay away from
mulch beds because of the odor and some mulch is treated with insecticides.
Mulching is usually done mid spring so the mulch stays fresh throughout
the holidays. We can provide you with a variety of mulches.
Getting
the Perfect Lawn
Having
a lawn that you can be proud of takes a lot of dedication and knowledge
of the turf. Feeding your lawn at the right time with the right
food in the correct amount will determine how healthy the turf is.
There are three main nutrients that your turf requires, they are
as follows:
1.
NITROGEN Is by far the most important. It promotes rapid
shoot growth and gives lawns a healthy color.
2.
PHOSPHORUS This nutrient is less important, but still essential.
It stimulates early formation and promotes strong root growth.
3.
POTASSIUM Next to nitrogen, potassium is second in importance.
It strengthens lawn grasses, enabling them to withstand traffic
and resist disease.
